Project

Biochar from Bolivia

Exomad's project in Bolivia starts where conventional forestry often leaves large amounts of biomass unused - up to 50% of a felled tree is usually burned or left to rot unused, causing significant CO₂ emissions. Using state-of-the-art technology, Exomad processes this surplus biomass in high-temperature chambers to produce biochar, a permanent carbon-binding material. Produced on an industrial scale, the project can bind up to 200,000 tons of CO₂ annually and is now considered the global market leader in the sale of biochar, with almost 300,000 tons already sold. The social added value is particularly noteworthy: the biochar produced is distributed free of charge to indigenous communities and local farmers, who can use it to increase their agricultural yields. In this way, the project not only strengthens local livelihoods, but also actively contributes to the protection of South American forests and the reduction of deforestation.
