This climate protection project uses the methane produced at the Kubratovo wastewater treatment plant in Bulgaria by capturing it and storing it in special fermenters. The gas is then used in gas engines to efficiently generate electricity and heat. Around 24,000 megawatt hours of clean energy are generated in this way every year - enough to supply around 2,300 households. Thanks to the particularly high efficiency of the plant, the sewage treatment plant covers its energy requirements entirely from its own biogas, thus reducing its dependence on external electricity supplies. In addition, the project avoids the release of around 70,000 tons of CO₂ emissions every year. The project therefore not only makes an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also promotes a sustainable energy supply and the protection of our climate.
